A Business Improvement District provides supplemental programs and services above and beyond those provided by the Town or other organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce.

Our goal is to promote business and cultural activity and create a thriving, accommodating destination for visitors and the local and regional communities.

  • Cultural Placemaking

The BID will implement activities that will unify the district, strengthen a sense of community and place, and make downtown a fun and engaging destination for everyone. Examples include live music, farmers’ market, pop-up retail events, outdoor movie series, restaurant week, and other signature events.

Placemaking also includes downtown beautification through landscaping, enhanced lighting, facade improvements, public art, tables and chairs, wayfinding and business directory signage, and so much more.

  • Marketing and Branding

The BID will focus on promoting Reading as a regional destination, strengthen collaborative marketing efforts, increase downtown access, and work to recruit and engage new businesses.

It will aim to develop and implement a consistent and sustainable marketing strategy for the entire downtown district, which may include the creation of a unified brand, website, calendar of events and programming, social media presence, e-newsletters, press opportunities, and more.

  • Business Support and Recruitment

The BID will support existing businesses and attract new businesses and investments within the district. It may provide technical assistance and consulting services for local businesses on topics such as digital marketing, e-commerce, collaborative marketing, retail design, merchandising, and more. It will also provide support around small business grant or loan programs, and COVID recovery for local businesses.

  • Advocacy

The BID will advocate for the downtown district property owners and work in collaboration with the Town of Reading and other community organizations and advocates. The BID will establish an MOU with the town and other property owner entities and secure a seat at the table to work collaboratively with the Town to advance the interests of the BID.
